CONSTELLATIONS (2025)
By Nick Payne
Directed by Alison Crosby
Roland (a bee keeper) and Marianne (a theoretical physicist) meet at a party. In that single moment, an unfathomable multitude of universes unfold. In this clever, eloquent and moving story, these star-crossed lovers live a myriad of possible lifetimes, capturing the extraordinary richness of being alive in the universe.
“Who knew that higher physics could be so sexy, so accessible — and so emotionally devastating?” -The New York Times
Starring Tom Colford & Bhreagh MacNeil

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
This play is, at its heart, about physics – how we experience physics. For instance, we have experienced gravity in that (thus far), we have happily not floated away into outer space where we would (presumably) die immediately. However, I believe we also experience gravity toward people. People who, for better or worse, change the direction of our personal collection of atoms and molecules into the life we find ourselves experiencing today and yesterday and tomorrow. Roland and Marianne, the two people we meet in Nick Payne’s Constellations, are inescapably pulled toward one another again and again. And maybe that’s the point of all of us being here together – to find the people we are inexplicably pulled toward and see what happens.
I am grateful to the Highland Arts Theatre for their work in bringing together this production and these artists, this particular configuration of atoms and molecules in the shape of people I care deeply about and deeply admire. Time is no small gift – thank you for spending some of yours here with us. I hope you enjoy the show.
