About the hat academy

In 2016 the foundation of the HAT Academy began with the very first HAT Resident Company. 50 participants, between ages 6 and 65, took class weekly and rehearsed for an upcoming showcase. The program was a smash and after another few goes the HAT Academy was official formed. Maintaining the Resident Company structure, for those looking to train in acting, singing and dancing, while adding more specialized classes like writing, improv, tap dance, Shakespeare and more.

In 2019 the Academy moved from St. Andrew’s Hall to its current home on Charlotte Street just behind the Highland Arts Theatre building. As of March 2024 the HAT Academy sees nearly 500 students annually, and has performed 14 different shows and showcases on the HAT Mainstage.

While offering a relaxed and welcoming environment, some students have taken things a step further. Many former and current HAT Academy students have been hired as regular collaborators on the professional productions at the HAT, onstage and behind the scenes. Past students have gone on to pursue the arts in post secondary schools across Canada, New York City and even in Europe.

From age 5 to 105, there is always something at the HAT Academy for anyone seeking community, creativity, and/or confidence.

Past productions include:
The 2016 HAT Resident Company Showcase, The 2018 HATCH Summer Showcase, Seussical the Musical, The 2019 HATCH Summer Showcase, Frozen JR, 15, All Together Now!, Alice In Wonderland (2021), Shrek JR, The Story of Tonight, Mary Poppins JR, The Wizard of Oz JR, We’ve Got Magic To Do!, The Music Man JR
