The Highland Arts Theatre is dedicated to presenting diverse and authentic stories from around
the world. Our upcoming production, “Crones” seeks to accurately and respectfully represent Indian culture through its costumes. We believe in the importance of authenticity and cultural representation and are looking for a dedicated Costume Consultant to join our team.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a Costume Consultant of colour with a background in costume design or fashion, specifically with experience in Indian attire. The ideal candidate will ensure the accuracy and cultural authenticity of our costumes, providing expertise in traditional and contemporary Indian fashion.
Responsibilities:
Research & Design:
Conduct thorough research on traditional and contemporary Indian clothing relevant to the play’s setting and characters.
Collaborate with the director and design team to create costume designs that are authentic and true to the cultural context of the play.
2. Consultation & Collaboration:
Provide expert advice on fabric choices, accessories, and styling to ensure cultural accuracy.
Work closely with costume designers and other production staff in the creation and fitting of costumes.
3. Education & Training:
Educate the cast and crew about the significance and proper wearing of the costumes.
4. Quality Control:
Ensure all costumes meet the high standards of authenticity and are appropriate for the characters and storyline.
Address any cultural sensitivity issues related to the costumes, making necessary adjustments.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in costume design, fashion, or related field.
Deep knowledge of Indian culture, fashion history, and traditional attire.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to cultural authenticity.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to work within a team.
Indian background preferred, to ensure lived cultural experience and perspective.
Preferred Skills:
Previous experience working in theatre or film production.
Knowledge of fabric sourcing and costume construction.
Ability to create sketches or use design software for costume concepts.
